A few weeks ago Justin got an email from an old, old "friend" (I'm sure you can guess why friend is in quotes...) that he hasn't seen or talked to since BC (before Christa). This "friend" is someone that I'd known about through various stories over the years (the man likes to tell stories, that is for sure). This email came at a time when we'd had a rough week...the stresses of being self-employed, having 3 kids, not a lot of time to ourselves or for each other. We'd had a definite tone of pissiness towards each other most of the week.
For about the first 10 minutes after this email arrived, it didn't help the situation. But what has happened since then has been fascinating and wonderful. Somehow that one email sent by this person on a whim (found him on LinkedIn and wondered what had become of him after all these years) has led to hours of conversation about things we haven't talked about in a long, long time (or in some cases, ever). The last few weeks we've neglected sleep and allowed the kids to amuse themselves more so that we could take some time for us. We've started doing things that would probably seem kinda mushy and/or corny but that help us to both know just how much our marriage and life together means to us.

What is fascinating to me is how something so random could have such an impact, and that it could have potentially turned into a jealous meltdown (albeit, irrationally)... but didn't. It really made me think about what can make or break a marriage and what would make or break us. We've talked about it. About how each of us has certain ways that we try to "safeguard" the marriage and protect what is ours. I like knowing that he thinks about that sort of stuff on occasion (or at least talks a good game!).
Sometimes I feel like our marriage is that long-shot horse that wins the Derby :-)

Christa, what an awesome post. Thanks for sharing. Paying attention -- it is what matters most in many things. I wish you and Justin years of love, laughter and learning more about one another.
